Giftex’s 6th edition: Modern and Contemporary Indian Art Auction was recently concluded on 14-15 OCT 2024. The event drew art enthusiasts and collectors from around and was a huge success. With rare pieces up for grabs, there was a lot of excitement and fierce bidding.
The collection, which included outstanding artworks and interesting sculptures, added an optimistic energy to the auction. This event highlighted modern art in all forms and reaffirmed Giftex’s status as a destination for collectors looking for something unique. The range of pieces demonstrated the creativity of the modern art world.
The 6th edition outperformed expectations with a total sales of ₹ 6,62,18,067. It was an auction to remember, with collectors having the opportunity to acquire some very unique works. The excitement in the room was apparent, as bidders competed for rare artworks and sculptures that exemplified contemporary creativity. This auction not only highlighted the beauty of modern and contemporary art but also confirmed Giftex’s reputation as a reliable source of excellent treasures.

Bidding Brilliance: Top 3 Lots
First on our list is lot no. 14 this standout artwork which fetched the highest bid of ₹ 18,52,087. This remarkable painting is “Remembering Wha,” an oil painting by Krishen Khanna. With over eighty years of expertise, Khanna has established himself as a key figure in Indian modern art, known for weaving stories into his paintings. This painting exemplifies his ability to combine symbolism and narrative, enabling viewers to delve into its emotional depth. Featured in Gayatri Sinha’s “The Embrace of Love” (2005, p. 42), exemplifies Khanna’s characteristic expressive brushwork and ability to provoke strong emotions, making it a memorable addition to any collection
Next on our list is Lot No. 48, a captivating painting by Bimal Dasgupta titled “Fantasy,” which fetched an impressive ₹16,83,716. This beautiful piece of art stands out because of its vivid and vibrant colours, which captivate the eye and arouse curiosity right away. This composition, which combines complex patterns and flowing forms, exemplifies the artist’s distinct style. Every brushstroke transforms “Fantasy” into an immersive experience as well as a visual feast
Moving forward we have Lot No. 35 which features Himmat Shah’s remarkable sculpture which went for ₹ 15,91,880. This piece captivates with its distinct features, which evoke a sense of fluidity and motion. This sculpture has a unique combination of curved and angular elements that entice the viewer with its elegant form. The sculpture’s textured surface provides an interesting tactile component. The sculpture’s meticulous details and thoughtful design illustrate Shah’s dedication to craftsmanship and artistic creativity, demonstrating why he is considered a key figure in contemporary Indian art.

The Maestro of Modern Indian Art: Krishen Khanna
Krishen Khanna is a well-known Indian artist whose career spans more than 80 years. He is well-known for his colourful paintings, which expertly combine personal experiences with cultural topics to create pieces that have a strong emotional impact on spectators, establishing him as a key figure in the art realm.
We were honoured to include two of his outstanding pieces in our auction, each exemplifying his distinct style and artistic depth.
Lot no. 14 is a painting titled ‘Remembering Wha’ by Krishen Khanna which fetched the highest bid of ₹ 18,52,089.
Lot no. 253, is another artwork by him executed in acrylic and charcoal on canvas which went for an incredible ₹ 12,99,318.

Next on the list is Lot no. 231 a painting by H A Gade executed in Watercolour on paper went for an amazing bid of ₹ 8,38,398
Last but not least is Lot no. 4 an artwork by Jamini Roy executed in Ink and watercolour on paper which went for a whooping bid of ₹ 9,74,051
