Early Life and Career

Born in Maidstone, Kent, on January 28, 1868, Frank Finn, an English Ornithologist, exhibited a passion for nature from an early age. He pursued his education at the prestigious Marlborough College and subsequently joined the University of Oxford. Post-graduation, Finn began a career that combined his academic interests and love for ornithology.

In 1892, he embarked on a collecting expedition to East Africa. By 1894, he had been appointed First Assistant Superintendent of the Indian Museum in Calcutta, later serving as Deputy Superintendent from 1895 to 1903. Following his return to England, he took on the role of editor for the Avicultural Magazine during 1909–1910.

His tenure in India was a turning point, as it provided him with the opportunity to study and document the rich avifauna of the subcontinent.

Finn was also a member of esteemed societies.  He was a fellow at the Zoological Society of London (FZS) and a member at the British Ornithologists’ Union (MBOU), further cementing his position as a leading ornithologist of his time.

4. Additionally, he edited Robert A. Sterndale’s book on the mammals of India and Ceylon, publishing a new and condensed version titled Sterndale’s Mammalia of India (1929), which featured an appendix on reptiles.
