A Preview of Masterpieces under the hammer

Here’s a look at some of the lots that will be featured in the auction.

Lot No. 6

Kartick Pyne’s artwork is celebrated for its vibrant colours and intricate details that pull viewers into a world of emotion and narrative. The present lot titled ”Untold Story”, and is a 1990 work in watercolour on paper by Kartick Pyne. The work exhibits a signature and date at the bottom centre and has been featured in the book, Shades and Shine of Kartick Chandra Pyne, (Dhoomimal Art Centre, New Delhi 2022, p. 73). The stories that Pyne can tell through his brush strokes and colour make him one of the most distinctive modern painters.

Lot No. 16

Thota Vaikuntam’s paintings depict Telangana in a formal and conventional manner. The presented lot was created in 1992 and is an acrylic-on-paper painting signed and dated in the lower left corner. The man is depicted in simple, traditional attire, with bold, angular features, while the woman wears vibrant, traditional clothing, reflecting her cultural identity. The exquisite details of both figures highlight the deep incorporation of the rural experience, portraying the vitality and dignity of the villagers in their everyday motions, as well as their spirits. Vaikuntam’s work is a vivid depiction of rural women in traditional costume, set against an earthy backdrop of reds and yellows that merge perfectly to create a warm inviting ambiance. His distinct representation of village life, particularly his concentration on Telangana women, has become a symbol of his artistic legacy.

Lot no. 14

The next on the list is an oil painting by Krishen Khanna titled “Remembering Wha”. Over a career of eight decades, Khanna has emerged as a prominent figure in Indian modernism, known for his narrative-focused works. Biblical tales, urban street life, and wedding band performers are among the subjects he frequently depicts in his paintings. “Remembering Wha” is no different, demonstrating Khanna’s skill at fusing symbolism with narrative. This moving piece, which sis featured in Gayatri Sinha’s “The Embrace of Love” (2005, p. 42), exemplifies Khanna’s distinctive technique of expressive brushwork and profound thematic resonance.

Lot no. 17

The presented lot is a painting by Sakti Burman, executed in mixed media on paper and is signed in the bottom centre. Sakti Burman uses a combination of pointillism and marbling, expertly combining oils and acrylics to create fresco-like works on paper and canvas. His works often have a surreal character, combining multiple eras and places and drawing inspiration from Hindu and European mythology, as well as his own experiences. His paintings, which feature mystical individuals, animals, and cityscapes, inspire a sense of surrealism.
