Gudi Padwa is one of the most prominent Hindu festivals in India. Gudi Padwa marks the beginning of the New Year for Marathi and Konkani people and it’s celebrated with great pomp and splendor in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, and UT such as Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu. How Do We Celebrate Gudi Padwa?

Gudi Padwa is celebrated by placing a ‘Gudi Flag’ outside the house, which is a sign of victory. Where Gudi will denote lord Brahma’s Flag, and Padwa would signify the first day of a new Moon phase. A Gudi flag is made by wrapping a thin & long bamboo stick with colourful cloth and decorated with neem, mango leaves, a saree or piece of silk cloth, and a garland of flowers. On the top of the bamboo stick, a silver or copper conical vessel is placed upturned. The edge of the vessel will be tied up with wrist thread and you need to draw a swastika design on it. The festival marks the beginning of a new season, of happiness, and fortune. So people will clean their homes, maybe renovate or paint, make rangoli, hang mango leaves above the main entrance door – known as Toran, take a customary oil bath, wear new clothes, and most importantly hoist the Gudi.

Other than this, the day is so auspicious that some Hindus plan to buy their new home and step into it on the ‘Muhurat’ as suggested by a Brahmin (pandit).
