Renowned Sculptors: Artists Who Defined an Era

Sculptures have undergone many changes in form and ideas since their inception around 30,000 B.C. Ramkinkar Baij (1906 – 1980)

Starting the list we have India’s most prominent modernist- Ramkinkar Baij. Born in Bankura, West Bengal into a barber’s family, at the age of 19 Baij moved to Shantiniketan to attend the experimental art school, Kala Bhavan. The themes he was open to discussing were ordinary people going about their everyday lives, their joys and pains, failures and victories. He demonstrated the “everyday” Indian and developed a new sculptural style that combined pre-classical Indian principles with modern Western ideas which altered the direction of Indian art. His influence on Indian art is still evident at Shantiniketan, where his work created by him as a student and as a faculty member can still be experienced.

The Santhal Family, Call of the Mill, and Yaksha-Yakshi, which is located outside the Reserve Bank of India in New Delhi, are a few of Ramkinkar Baij’s well-known sculptures.

Donatello (1386 – 1466)

Donatello di Niccolò di Betto Bardi, widely recognized as Donatello was born in the city of Florence, Italy. He was introduced to the art of sculpting at the age of 16 when he worked as an apprentice metalsmith. Four years later when he moved to Rome to study classical art he started absorbing the subtleties of Gothic paintings. However, his style became more classical and unique as the Italian Renaissance (c. 1300–1600) continued.

He was able to carve figures in stone, metal, and wood with a level of realism and empathy never seen in sculptures before. Eventually, he established a new benchmark for producing sculptures with depth and perspective during the course of his successful career across Italy.

David, The Pazzi Madonna, and The Baptism of Christ are a few of Donatello’s well-known sculptures.

Jasuben Shilpi (1948 – 2013)

The next sculptor on our list is the “Bronze Women of India” – Jasuben Shilpi. Often seen in her denim dungarees with sculpting tools in her hands this woman never conformed to the societal norms. She was bold enough to break into a male-dominated field when women sculptors were rarely seen. During her career of four decades, she sculpted over 225 big-size statues and 525 bust-size statues in bronze. She has been very passionate about art since childhood. She attended Sheth C. N. College Of Fine Arts in Ahmedabad, where she was one of just five women in her class!

Jasuben’s largest creation is a 28-foot-tall Hanuman statue, which holds the world record for the tallest bronze statue sculpted by a woman. Her other significant works include four statues of Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi and statues of Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi

Michelangelo (1475 – 1564)

Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni also known as Michelangelo was a Renaissance sculptor who was born in Caprese, Italy, and moved to Florence as an infant. Coming from a family of stone-cutters Michelangelo, like Donatello, received proper classical art guidance, but from the high-status Lorenzo de’ Medici.

Michelangelo was a multi-disciplinary artist who worked in painting, architecture, and poetry, but marble sculpting was his chosen medium. His works, including the sculpture ‘Angel,’ opened the way for the Mannerist (ca. 1520-1600), Counter-Reformation (ca. 1545-1700), and Baroque periods (ca. 1600-1750).

Kanaka Murthy (1942 – 2021)

Next on the list, we have the first woman whose sculptures were worshiped in the temples- Kanaka Murthy. Driven by the mesmerizing sound of stone chipping, the round edges, and the slow emergence of shape and texture, Kanaka Murthy developed a passion for sculpting at a very young age. She was highly influenced by a visit to a temple in Mysuru, which confirmed her determination to pursue a career in sculpture. After earning a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and physics in Bangalore, Kanaka defied traditional expectations of marriage and pursued a new route. She joined an art school named Kalamandir where she met her Guru the prominent sculptor Devalankunda Vadiraj whose work had a tremendous impact on her. She began her apprenticeship under Vadiraj, which was the start of her five-decade career in sculpture, during which chisel and hammer became her life-long companions.

The bust of Kanada poet and writer Kuvempu, The Wright Brothers, and an eight-foot-tall idol of Lord Ganesha are some of her renowned sculptures.

Sudarshan Shetty

Born in Mangalore, Karnataka, India’s most notable international artist- Sudarshan Shetty is well-known for his mechanized installations of everyday items in amusing and unexpected ways. He frequently addresses existential themes like death, impermanence, and futility in his art, which he characterizes as a ‘fairground spectacle.’
