Artistic Influences

Choyal’s early exposure to the indigenous art forms of Rajasthan, combined with his formal education in the avant-garde atmosphere of J.J. School of Art, allowed him to blend tradition with innovation. His works often reflect this duality, balancing modern sensibilities with ancient storytelling traditions, making his paintings both timeless and relevant.

Shail Choyal’s art is deeply influenced by a variety of sources, including the Rajasthani miniature painting tradition, Indian mythology, folklore, and surrealism. The miniature style is most evident in his detailed and delicate brushwork and the use of vibrant, often flat colours. His connection to folklore and mythology allows him to weave complex stories into his works, with recurring themes of human relationships, morality, and spiritual quests.

Another strong influence on his style is surrealism, which can be seen in the dreamlike, sometimes whimsical, environments he creates, populated by figures that seem both familiar and otherworldly.

Choyal’s fascination with the tradition of storytelling finds expression in his narrative-driven paintings. His ability to blend fantastical elements with everyday life lends his works a magical realism that invites viewers to step into a world where the boundaries between the real and the imaginary blur.
