Marilyn Monroe’s Superhyped Life

Monroe’s reel and real life were not separate. She was the image of a classic Hollywood personality and a symbol of love. Monroe’s life was controlled by her public appearance and image. Her private life was also in public paws. All of Monroe’s personal relationships were torn apart by the press and everything she did was heavily scrutinized, staged, and publicized. Monroe was often being taught how to act & what to do. The image we know of Monroe was followed by Hollywood even before her first movie. Monroe came from a low-class family and even worked as a pin-up girl which branded her as a sex symbol in films instead of housewives, politicians, or any other impactful character.

The Birth Of ‘Marilyn Monroe’

Birth Of Marilyn Monroe

Monroe was born Norma Jeane Mortenson in Los Angeles in 1926, but after signing her first contract with Fox, she & Fox executive – Ben Lyon started looking for a stage name for her. Lyon suggested “Marilyn” as her first name as she reminded him of Broadway star Marilyn Miller and she suggested “Monroe” as her new last name as it was her mother’s maiden name. Marilyn’s grandparents were Della Mae Monroe & Otis Elmer Monroe.

Monroe’s Career Journey

In 1944, she got her first break as a model for the photographer, who clicked her picture at a munitions factory. Thus, her self-construction began. Slowly, and steadily fitting in with the pin-up model roles, hair straightening and blonde, working harder than her peers, Monroe became a regular feature on the covers of men’s magazines as Jean Norman. Her blonde hair, iconic figure, and style banked her role as the ‘blonde bombshell’ of Niagara & Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, where she played Anita Loos’ titular ‘dumb blonde’ with comedic genius, & even sang the iconic ‘Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend’.

The Seventh Year Itch

The Seventh Year Itch

The Seven-Year Itch saw her stand above a subway grate, with her white dress blowing above her thighs. Indeed an iconic image still remains fresh in the minds of millions of Monroe fans. She even gave her comic radiance in films like Some Like It Hot, but she was plagued by physical & mental problems including tragic failed pregnancies & more. In 1962, Monroe was in a serious medical condition but she sang ‘Happy Birthday, Mr. President to John F. Kennedy in May.

On the outside, Monroe’s life may have looked charismatic and dreamy, but in real life, Marilyn was struggling with a lot of internal anxieties that eventually led to her tragic death. Had this starlet been saved if it weren’t for Hollywood? Maybe or maybe not. But one thing is sure – as much as Hollywood did change Monroe, even Marilyn Monroe etched a new Hollywood for generations to come.
